Cannabis Edibles: Reducing the Harm

Posted On: Wednesday, October 16, 2019

On October 17, the federal government will legalize and introduce new regulations for cannabis edibles, extracts and topicals. These products are subject to the same laws as all other cannabis products. If you choose to use these products, the Grey Bruce Health Unit urges caution to reduce the risk of harm.

Cannabis Edibles: Reducing the Harm

“Our primary concern is the safety of children and pets by ensuring cannabis is properly stored and labeled to prevent accidental consumption.” says Jason Weppler, Health Promoter. “Edible cannabis users should start with a low dose of THC and go slow as delayed onset can lead to overconsumption.”

If choosing to use edible cannabis, Public Health recommends following Health Canada’s guidelines to lower the risk:

  • Choose products with 2.5 mg of THC or less
  • To avoid overconsumption, wait at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours after your initial intake before consuming more of the product, as it can take up to 2 hours to feel the effects
  • Ensure edibles are properly labeled and stored securely out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not use cannabis and drive
  • Avoid consuming cannabis and alcohol together as it can increase the effect of intoxication
  • Limit and reduce how often you use cannabis
