Posted On: Wednesday, April 25, 2018

The Town applied to the Municipal Greenhouse Gas Challenge Fund for support of a project that will replace tanker haulage of landfill leachate with a forcemain and pump station.

MPP Jim Wilson presented the cheque to the Town on: Friday, April 27, 2018 at 1pm

In 2016 and 2017 the Town hauled approximately 25,000 cubic meters (m3) of leachate in over 700 diesel truck loads or 165,000 kilometres of travel per year. This project will reduce 25,143 equivalent carbon dioxide tonnes between construction and 2051 by switching fuel sources and fitting the pump station with a photo voltaic renewable energy source.

The Town will contribute $250,000 in funds and $75,000 in-kind to this $2.6 million project and will benefit from annual operational savings of approximately $75,000. There are also additional benefits including a reduction in leachate related odours and by reducing local truck traffic.
