This year we have changed the event name to The Blue Mountains Gran Fondo from the Grey County Road Race for the following reasons:
• To better align with UCI Gran Fondo World Series
• We are already following the rules, format and spirit of a Gran Fondo
• The event starts and ends at the Beaver Valley Community Centre, Thornbury
• We are introducing a Medio Fondo, 75km distance route for those who want to participate in a shorter distance
In 2011 the UCI created the UCI GFWS (rebranded in 2016 from the UWCT – UCI World Cycling Tour) as a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Feeding into the 2018 Gran Fondo World Championships that are being held inform Aug 30- Sept 2nd in Varese, Italy, there are Twenty-one qualifier events up from fourteen in 2016. In the qualifier events the top 25% from each age group will qualify for the Amateur World Championships, where the champions will be awarded with the coveted rainbow jersey.
The Blue Mountains Gran Fondo, on June 14th (TT) and June 16th (RR), is currently the only Canadian stop for the UGFWS qualifier events.
The 2018 race will have 2 distances, with the race distance determined by the participant age categories:
Short Course: 112km with 1363 meters of elevation gain
Long Course: 155km with 1733 meters of elevation gain
The Blue Mountains Medio Fondo Course 75.3kms
The Registration Office will open on Saturday June 16th starting at 6am. Registration closes 30 minutes before start time.
